BLOOD DIAMOND from ABOVE on Vimeo.
...directamente desde los HQ de Above. Gracias viejo!
Africa has had a devastating history of blood diamond wars. Blood diamond refers to a diamond mined in a war zone and then sold to finance an invading army's war efforts, usually in Africa where more than two-thirds of the worlds diamonds are extracted.
This site specific social / political word play was painted on the exterior wall of Johannesburg's largest diamond trader Jewel City.
Jewel City is a six-block mega-precinct that serves as a base for some 300 diamond traders as well as South Africa's Diamond Board and State Traders Association.
Jewel City is the largest diamond exporter in the southern hemisphere with over R7-Billion worth of Diamonds being exported every year.
I was able to get away with this diamond wall heist because I told the owners I would paint in big letters "Diamonds are a woman's best friend" on the exterior of their building. The owners loved the idea and all quickly agreed.
The next day I had started painting but what the owners didn't know is that I lied to them and was hijacking their wall. Like any premeditated robbery, situations are not what they seem and shit can flip from best friends to worst enemies in a few moments.
I assume the owners were too busy trading diamonds inside the mega centre they never took the time to come out and see I was painting a controversial word play about the diamond trade and how it's fueled so much bloodshed in wars making it one of man's worst enemies.
...genial!
This is an awesome video for the Painting Reality Sao Paulo project executed on March 23rd, 2012. During 10 days more and 120 actions such as this occured in the city center in order to "take back" the streets for the people. For the opening of the Baixo Centro festival over 200 liters of water soluble ink were poured into the streets, using the movement of the cities cars, buses, bikes, and people to create an all organic, live painting. By the next morning it had all been cleaned, making it an effective yet less destructive way of bringing color and art back into the streets. This project was inspired by the German Painting Project Reality by Rosenthaler Platz in Berlin during 2010 posted below.

USUGROW from Louis Mitchell on Vimeo.
With mind bending meticulous detail, Usugrow's work crosses the line between bad ass and refined elegance.
While developing his vision and technique, Usugrow worked designing promotional graphics for Japan's punk and metal scenes, Usugrows unique, stylized combination of traditional Japanese artwork and punk iconography soon made him the visual identity of Tokyo's underground,
But Usugrows' global notoriety begun when overseas brands saw the potential for collaborative projects, resulting in a series of collectable products and feature articles in leading counterculture and art publications. A global cult following quickly resulted.
As a conscious leader of his community, Usugrow has been using his fame to organize and promote a new Japanese art movement consisting of a tribe of highly talented artists with roots in the metal, punk, hip hop and tattoos, all of whom share his elegant aesthetics.
This group, known as The Shinganists (The Outsiders) consists of Usugrow, Mozyskey, Toshikazu Nozaka, Bene & Jun Kaneko and have exhibited collectively and individually across the globe, representing a true and revolutionary art movement.
Motifs of skulls and death are commonly depicted Usugrows black and white artwork, however instead acting as reminders our own mortality, Usugrow endeavors to represent them as symbols of rebirth and beauty.

MURAL "PROTEO" .

HCTN EPISODE 5 : SEGO & SANER from Here Comes the Neighborhood on Vimeo.
In this Episode of Here Comes the Neighborhood, Mexican artists Saner and Sego collaborate on a mural for the Wynwood Walls. They create a colorful dreamscape together, building on themes that each of the artists have explored for years. Saner's interpretation of the work, and his poetic eloquence helps elevate the wall into an ethereal realm, while Sego, traveling to the United States for the first time, brings an astute attention to detail, and a stunning technique grounded in the complexities of the natural world. These Artists exemplify the power of art, both public and private, to function as a change agent, using this mural as a tool to reframe the worlds view of Mexico; from a dangerous narco state, to one of the most beautiful, mystical and transformative cultures in the world.

Oficial:
ONLINE WORLD PREMIERE. "Inside Outside" follows ZEVS and other so-called street artists from New York, Stockholm, Copenhagen and São Paulo. They all make a living off their art, but they also have an urge to exhibit their work illegally in the streets. "Inside Outside" is a film about the energy artists get when working in the street. An energy they're missing when exhibiting in galleries and museums, an energy that brings life to their art and to their own lives. It´s an energy that's partly caused by the fact that everything these artists do in the street is illegal; "Anything that gives you security is eventually going to restrict you at some point", says Swoon about the art galleries.

El Mac - Sai Gon, Viet Nam "Kosoom by the Mekong" from Viet Nam The World Tour on Vimeo.
El Mac painted this beautiful mural in front of Sàn Art, an independent artist space, and just outside the offices of The Propeller Group in Ho Chi Minh City, Viet Nam. It is based on a photo of Kosoom, the grandmother of El Mac's girlfriend.
All of the photographs included in this video as well as the footage of motorbikes zooming through the city were taken by El Mac. Part of his process, is documenting different people from different places and selecting a handful to paint on walls around the world. We wanted this video piece to be a reflection of how El Mac saw the world of Viet Nam for the first time, taking it all in, and juxtaposing the fast paced life in the city with this giant portrait that would literally slow people down in admiration as they passed by.

La descripción original:
The Shadow Machine from Jason Eppink.
"The Shadow Machine is a hand-made analog projection system that reanimates two blacksmiths from the late 1800's, photographed by Eadweard Muybridge and compiled on plate #374 of his Animal Locomotion series.
The Shadow Machine was conceived of and created for the The Underbelly Project, an extraordinary, unauthorized exhibition of more than one hundred international street artists in an abandoned subway station in New York City. The Shadow Machine's projected, ghostly figures hammer away in complete darkness at the far end of the platform, ever-toiling spirits working on a never-finished station that was abandoned generations ago.
Inside the Machine, six frames hand-painted on clear plexiglass operate as gobos when lit from behind by narrow beam LEDs. A light sequence, controlled by an Arduino board with custom software using a 9V battery, casts each successive shadow in a loop."... Jason Eppink

*To understand this piece better please read the text before watching. If you already watched the video without reading the text, please read the text then watch the video again.
Last year I was traveling for 3-months around Europe and spent 2 weeks in Paris. One day when I was walking around Paris I found this spot but unfortunately I had just 1 day before my flight to Rome. After observing the large concrete frame on the wall, it gave me a lot of inspiration for several ideas on how to creatively interact with the un-used frame and location. One idea was to juxtapose an "art thief" stealing a popular painting like the Mona Lisa from the frame. I felt the idea and site-specific stencil would interact well with the un-used frame and the fact that the Mona Lisa is located just 10 minutes away inside the Louvre museum.
Time always changes things and with that new situations arise. Since last year when I was in Paris I've noticed a lot of new topics in street art and more importantly the thievery of art works in the street. I felt it more interesting and relative to have the art thief portrayed in the stencil stealing a piece of art that actually gets stolen quite often. The English artist Banksy is one of the most popular street artists and highly publicized victims of his street artworks being stolen. It's not by random chance this happens to Banksy's art as first and foremost he makes great work but also due to the fact that his indoor works have sold for several hundred thousand dollars you can imagine when he paints outside in the street his works are soon sought after by thieves.
It's an interesting concept and somewhat of an irony as we the artists and the thieves are both working in an illegal manner. One illegal activity inspires another. The artist paints illegally with spray cans on a wall, while the thieves jack hammer and chip off illegally painted walls, illegally. It's kind of like the pot calling the kettle black to a degree.
I took the initiative to comment and create a situation in this piece that could mimic both illegal acts simultaneously executed here in the painting and in the process.
Many years ago before Banksy's mass appeal he painted his popular rat image that read, "Because I'm worthless." Times have changed Banksy is a common household name as well as the increased value of his artworks. I felt like it would be applicable to the current state of affairs to appropriate his previous statement to "Because now I'm worth it" to reflect the past and current thievery of his street artworks.
"A lot of people never use their initiative because no-one told them to"

"Railtracks and a traincar at the backyard of the Molotow™ Headquarters, how does that sounds to you? Well, we made it. Crazy for many reasons. At the end of the day we are sure to offer the perfect surface for an upcoming project. That train is our tribute to an very important movement of the worldwide graffiti art scene."

Recomendable!

Joao Wainer is a photographer who lives in São Paulo and documents the Pixação Graffiti in his hometown. He already released several photographs and videos about that unique urban art and writing style, which comes from the favelas into the big Brazilian cities.
For this reason, "Cool Hunting" did a nice and interesting Pixação graffiti video with him. In this short documentation, he explains some letters and talks about the ideas behind that graffiti movement. Unfortunately, the video is some month old, but a must to see. And because I haven't wrote anything about Pixação yet, I will now show you this nice film.
By the way, one of Joao Wainer's films, called "Pixo", is shown at the Fondation Cartier in Paris, as a part of the "Born in the Streets" graffiti exhibition, which was extended until January 10th, 2010 because of its great success.
